New technology nearly triples capacity, keeps assessment and treatment local and allows for greater collaboration between academic hospitals and educational institutions.
MARKHAM, ON October 28, 2015 –Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington has become the first community hospital in Canada to acquire two Toshiba Aquilion ONE Volume CT Scanners. The installation of these advanced medical devices immediately increases the hospital's ability to diagnose and treat residents in the community, keeping them close to home when dealing with health issues. The technology acquisition was made possible as part of the hospital's redevelopment and expansion project where funds were contributed specifically for the purchase of new medical equipment.
"We are committed to providing some of the best patient-centered care available. This new technology means that we can assess, monitor and treat more community members right here at home, without having to send them to larger medical centres," said Dr. John Rawlinson, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at Joseph Brant Hospital. "This advanced technology also paves the way for unprecedented collaboration with academic hospitals and educational institutions which is exciting and can bring real benefits to both sides of the relationship."
"The benefits to the community, in terms of the hospital's ability to address the needs of its growing population, are numerous," said Jens Dettmann, General Manager and VP, Toshiba of Canada Limited, Medical Systems Division. "Joseph Brant Hospital is demonstrating an example in Ontario and Canada by putting its patients first, and providing world class diagnostics and assessment close to home."
The two Toshiba Aquilion ONE Volume CT Scanners replace one older CT unit. Immediate benefits include decreasing wait times by doubling the available CT Scanners for better and faster diagnosis of such things as cardiac artery disease and stroke imaging. The new CT Scanners can complete a head CT scan in 0.5 seconds and a heart CT scan in 0.275 seconds.
Joseph Brant Hospital's new imaging capabilities provide the opportunity to expanded comprehensive services in Cardiology, Oncology and Neurology. The new technology along with the existing and potential collaborations between academic hospitals and educational institutions benefits patients, inspire medical staff and can help attract physicians to join the hospital.
